Name and position: Kristy Bottrall, Junior Buyer at Secret Sales Brief history of how you got to where you are now: I have worked in buying for about 5 years. Before that I was a store manager, but I just had such a passion for product that I made the move to the more creative side of the retail business. I have been lucky enough to work across most areas of buying including men’s women’s, clothing, accessories and footwear. Favourite part of your job?I have to say that I love most of what I do, but I would say my favourite would be the relationships that I build with the brands and suppliers I work with. There is nothing more fulfilling than working together with fellow creative people and watching your hard work turn into something stunning! Biggest hurdle or challenge you have faced or still face? I think a lot of buyers would agree that one of the trickiest things about what we do is putting personal taste aside. It is really easy to want to buy something because you love it, but you need to remain objective as to what your customer would want. The two aren’t always the same! Your favourite piece in the new collection? The Hallie Skirt. I love this look as it encompasses one of this season’s hottest trends, purple. I particularly love the shade of the skirt which is the perfect berry that will flatter any skin tone or hair colour. Your favourite restaurant? That’s a tough one as I love food!! I’m a big fan of the Kensington Roof Gardens as much for the gardens as the food. From a purely food perspective there is a lovely local restaurant to me called, Allegro, which never fails to deliver a gorgeous meal. What are you reading right now? Vogue! It’s all I have time to read at the moment as this is the busiest time of year for me on the lead up to Christmas. Most stylist celebrity – or who do you admire? I know that it’s cliché but I always love what Kate Middleton is wearing. She has done such great things for the UK High St by mixing it with designer pieces and I love that she wears clothing from local designers whenever she travels. Key investment piece for the Autumn: The perfectly cut coat. A winter coat is something that you get such value out of in our climate and having one that fits you to perfection is an essential for me. Secret to success? Particularly in my working life, I think it’s important to emulate the swan; calm and still on the surface, paddling like mad underneath! Your Moto / saying for life: You only get one, experience everything that you can in the time you have.
